The Department of Art History and Archaeology at the University of Maryland and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art have jointly sponsored the Middle Atlantic Symposium in the History of Art since 1971.  The Symposium offers an opportunity not only for advanced graduate students to present their research to the public, but also to bring together the academic and museum communities in the greater Washington area.

Participating institutions are American University, Bryn Mawr College, Duke University, Emory University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, the Pennsylvania State University, Temple University, the University of Delaware, the University of North Carolina, the University of Virginia, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, and Virginia Commonwealth University, seven of which join the University of Maryland to form each year's cohort.

The 45th Annual Sessions of the Symposium will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 6th and 7th, 2015, and will begin with a tea in the Atrium of the Art/Sociology Building at the University of Maryland at 5 pm on Friday, followed at 6 pm with the George Levitine Lecture. Dr. Sheila Dillon, Professor of Art History and Classical Studies at Duke University and editor of the American Journal of Archaeology, will deliver her lecture "Portrait Statues and the "Art Worlds" of Hellenistic Athens: Four Stories," followed by a dinner (by subscription). Students will present their papers the following day at the National Gallery of Art, where the Symposium will conclude with a reception.

The Art Gallery will remain open for extended hours that evening. Guests are invited to view Reshuffling the Past: 2015 Contemporary Chinese Ink Art before the lecture.
